No Matter the Season, There’s Always a Reason to Visit Howard County!

Spring awakens nature and beauty unfolds.

In early March native plants emerge in the environmentally sound gardens of the Howard County Conservancy, where history intertwines with horticulture. In mid April 1,500 Blossoms of Hope cherry trees grace roadways, parks and attractions with a panorama of pink. And, just weeks later, 22,000 mature azalea bushes in hues of red, purple and orange bloom at the nationally-famous Brighton Dam Azalea Garden. Discover the beauty of sheep and the warmth of wool in early May at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. A few weeks later, sample the region’s finest wines as music fills the air at Wine in the Woods – Maryland’s largest wine festival.

Summer brings visual and performing arts.

Discover the Chesapeake Shakepeare Company in the ruins of Ellicott City’s historic Victorian girls’ school as they perform The Bard’s beloved works under the stars! In June the Columbia Festival of the Arts brings a multi-day extravaganza of performing and visual art performances. Columbia’s Lakefront explodes with fireworks to mark Independence Day and the season is in full swing at Merriweather Post Pavilion, the legendary outdoor concert venue where a who’s who of musical stars come to play.

Autumn colors delight.

The beautiful Patapsco River Valley and Park is at its finest this time of year. The serene waters of Centennial Lake and Lake Kittamaquandi reflect colorful tree-lined shores. The Robinson Nature Center offers educational opportunities both outdoors and indoors with interactive and interpretive displays and trails. Orange pumpkins and ripe, red apples ready for picking bring the season’s vibrant palette to a multitude of local farms where family fun festivals are plentiful.

Winter arrives with holiday magic.

Beautifully decorated shop windows and special shopping weekends set the mood on Main Street in Ellicott City and at the Historic Savage Mill. A sparkling drive-thru wonderland dazzles both young and old at the annual Symphony of Lights animated light display. A year-round attraction, Toby’s Dinner Theatre offers audiences an especially warm welcome this time of year as Broadway favorites come to life in an intimate setting.
