The Origins of Jazz; Seth Kibel, Musician

Part of the Salon Series at the Columbia Art Center.

Enjoy an evening of music and discussion which focuses  on the early decades of music that is now called jazz. The discussion will focus on New Orleans where multiple ethnicities and several musical traditions all converged to give birth to this uniquely American genre. You will then travel to Chicago, in the 1920s, and wind up in New York, which ultimately becomes the epicenter of jazz from the 1930s up until the present day. Genres examined will include dixieland, stride piano, early swing, and big band music.

Bring It On – The Musical

Based on the major motion picture franchise of the same name, Bring It On the Musical follows would-be cheer captain Campbell as she is suspiciously re-districted from preppy Truman High to the hard-knock Jackson High. Against the odds, Campbell befriends the head of Jackson’s dance crew, Danielle. Together, they form a powerhouse cheerleading squad to stand toe-to-toe with Campbell’s old team while they learn about the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal, and forgiveness.

Bring It On the Musical features a book by Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights) and Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), and lyrics by Amanda Green (High Fidelity). With the Broadway pedigree of its creators, there’s no wonder that Bring It On was nominated for a Best Musical TONY Award in 2013.

Drama Learning Center’s Teen Professional Company, TYA (Teaching Young Actors), presents its spring production of Bring It On the Musical from June 12-20, 2015 at Drama Learning Center in Columbia.
