Plein Air

Paint It! Ellicott City

Arts Council

June 27-July 1, 2019

Come on out this summer as artists take to the streets of Historic Ellicott City to participate in our plein air event!

We proudly partner with Howard County Tourism and Mat About You Framing & Gallery to host Paint It! Ellicott City. Also known as a paint-out, this event brings artists outside to paint directly from life, without the aid of photography. The weekend draws many spectators to Main Street’s sidewalks.

Spectators can follow the artists as they set up their easels around Ellicott City’s historic district and paint the picturesque mill town and join us for the exciting “quick draw” event. The event culminates in an exhibit at the Howard County Center for the Arts.

Artists and visitors may view and purchase the finished pieces during the exhibit’s free opening reception when the juror hands out awards to the artists, including the top prize —  the $2,000 Gino Award — named in honor of Gino Manelli (1915-2010), an avid cyclist and artist who established his art studio in Ellicott City. A temporary exhibit of artwork from the Paint It! Ellicott City Open Paint-Out will also be displayed during the exhibit reception.
